Patent Strategies for Early Stage Investments

by Thought Leader:

Jeff Schell

from Rocky Mountain Patent

This class is designed for investors and entrepreneurs to learn side by side.

"Patents Strategies for Early Stage Investments" is a necessity for early-stage entrepreneurs who are often cash-strapped but also need to protect their Intellectual Property (IP) to show to investors. This class will introduce you to the basic principles of patent law and walk you through the process of obtaining a patent"

Attendees at this event will learn about how to craft the most effective patent and Intellectual Property strategies for early stage companies from the perspective of both investor and entrepreneur.

Some of the topics covered include:
What are the IP options to consider?  Patent, trademark, trade dress, trade secret, copyright, none of the above?
How long does it take to get a patent?
What are provisional patents and how do they differ from traditional patents?
How much does it cost to get a patent?
Is it better to have a broad or narrow patent strategy with regard to claims?
How do investors value patents when conducting due diligence?
Which industries virtually require patents (healthcare, drugs, devices) and in which are they almost optional (software)
How can filing provisional patents actually harm a company rather than help?
Types of patents: Plant Patent, Utility Patent, Design Patents.
Licensing strategies - how to monetize your patents most effectively.

Intellectual property is an important part of investing in startup companies and both investors and entrepreneurs should understand the opportunities and risks with various intellectual property strategies.

Meet and learn with other Rockies Venture Club participants in a relaxed environment. We will enjoy refreshments while we outline the tricky topic of IP protection.
